Cooking with Kids: Nutella Pancakes

Updated: Jul 29, 2020

Learn to make Nutella pancakes with the Nothing But Neel kids!

Taya & Tessa from Nothing But Neel got creative in the kitchen to create a new family favorite: Nutella Pancakes!

The Neel kids took on this recipe largely by themselves, from idea to inception and even consumption. They didn't even make enough for mom and dad, but we did get a bite for the sake of writing this post. As always, anytime kids are in the kitchen, they need adult supervision - so we kept an eye on them the entire time!

What you'll need:

  • Nutella

  • Pancake Mix

  • Non stick cooking spray

  • Non cook skillet or griddle

  • Wax Paper

  • Spatula

  • Optional: Syrup, butter, fruit, and/or powdered sugar

We opted for a store bought 'shake and pour' pancake mix. You literally just add water up to the fill line and then just shake and pour directly into your pan. No measuring, no mess! This simplifies the process and makes for easy clean up which is always a win, especially if the kids are spearheading the project. Any pancake mix will work, you can even make it from scratch if that's your thing! 1. Prep your Nutella: Spread a small amount of nutella on to a sheet of wax paper. You can make your disc as big or as small as you'd like, but the bigger your nutella disc, the bigger your pancake will be. We opted for smaller discs, about 3" in diameter and only about a quarter inch thick. Repeat for as many pancakes as you plan to make and we suggest making a few extras in case any break. Put wax paper nutella discs on a flat surface in your freezer. Freeze until solid (2 - 3 hours)

  2. Prep your pancake batter according to the directions on the package or using one of these recipes.

  3. Remove Nutella discs from freezer.

  4. Heat your skillet to medium heat. Spray with non cooking spray.

  5. Carefully pour your batter into the pan, batter should be about an inch bigger than your Nutella disc. *Pro tip* Use a measuring spoon to make each pancake the same size!

  6. Place a Nutella disc directly into the center of the batter. Do this quickly after the initial pour before your batter gets cooked all the way through. Top with more batter if needed to cover the disc completely.

  7. Flip your pancake once batter begins to get covered in small air bubbles.

  8. Cook another 1 - 2 minutes until your pancake is golden.

  9. Repeat until you use all batter and Nutella discs.

  10. Top with your favorite pancake toppings (Optional) These are yummy all on their own!
